At the May 3 launch of the Peace Journalists Network in Abuja, the Interim Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Professor Jacob Udo-Udo Jacob, told a cross-section of Nigerian journalists that there is an urgent need for more stories of peace and reconciliation initiatives to circulate through the local media.
“The media do not need to only cover violence and casualty figures,” Professor Jacob said. “The media do not need to show us images of mangled, bleeding bodies. They do not have to be stories of death before they get to the front page of national newspapers. I think stories of peace and reconciliation deserve to be told.”
